About the Motability Scheme

Getting around is now a fundamental part of our daily lives, and having an independent form of transport should not be seen as a luxury item, it should be a basic necessity that allows the freedom to explore, keep in touch with loved ones and perform essential daily tasks.

The Motability scheme helps make the independence that comes with having your own vehicle available to anyone qualifying for a Motability vehicle by providing a unique leasing package designed solely for the benefit of disabled people. How the Motability Scheme Works

The Motability Scheme has over the years helped more than three million disabled people get mobile by exchanging their mobility allowance to lease a new car, and there are currently around 600,000 people nationwide enjoying the benefits of the Motability Scheme, so you’ll be in great company. The scheme is administered by Motability, a not-for-profit registered charity that works with those who receive the Higher Motability Component of the Disability Living Allowance.

Motability is responsible for the finance, administration and maintenance of all Motability cars, so when you lease a car all, or part of your higher rate mobility allowance is paid directly to Motability Operations for the length of the agreement. Included with the agreement is a whole host of benefits and special Motability Adaptations, many of which are free, so the only thing you actually need to budget for is your fuel. What’s more, if you can’t drive yourself, you can even nominate drivers who can drive the mobility car on your behalf, and these named drivers can be friends, family or carers. Also, if it is your child that receives the mobility allowance you can choose to lease a car on their behalf through the scheme.

Eligibility

To be eligible to join the Motability Scheme, you need to receive one of the following mobility allowances and you must have at least 12 months’ award length remaining. As a parent or guardian you can also lease through Motability if you have a child aged three or over who receives the allowance. Plus if you receive the mobility allowance but are unable to drive, you can even nominate two other people to drive on your behalf. Please note that the Attendance Allowance cannot be used to lease a car through the Scheme.

Motability Adaptations

Motability adaptations can make a huge difference to your motoring experience and with over 400 adaptations available on the Motability Scheme, you’ll be sure to find the right options to make your driving or travelling experience as comfortable as possible. Depending on the type of adaptations you require, they could enable you to drive where previously you’ve been unable to, help you to access your vehicle and help you to stow your wheelchair or scooter.

Should I consider Motability adaptations?

When choosing the vehicle that’s right for you, there are some things you could consider that may improve your experience, without requiring any adaptations. For example, you may find that choosing a vehicle with an automatic gearbox, push-button ignition, parking sensors or a boot with flat entry could be the right solution. owever, if you need more help with driving, accessing your vehicle or stowing your wheelchair, then adaptations could be the answer. When considering making adaptations to your vehicle, the best place to start is to think about your current car experience and what you may find difficult.

If when driving your car...
