The Honda Jazz wins the Layer Marney Cup MPG Event

10 September 2019

Last month saw the annual recreation of the Layer Marney Cup MPG Event, which was originally held on the 6th June 1914 and celebrates its 105th Anniversary, take place in central England and the Honda Jazz was crowned the winner.

Kevin Booker BSc, from Brecon Beacons National Park Authority and his friend, Fergal McGrath who works at Honda UK in Swindon (and who holds TWO Guinness World Records for the lowest fuel consumption in a Honda Civic Tourer diesel (2015) and a Honda Jazz (2017), teamed up to participate in the event and their vehicle of choice for this event was a Honda Jazz 1.3 manual (petrol), kindly provided to them for the event by Bristol Honda (HSH Motor Group).

The historic Layer Marney Cup MPG event took the vehicles on a route of circa 70 miles; starting at RHS Hyde Hall, Rettendon, Essex, via St Peters Chapel, Bradwell on Sea, Southminster and finishing at Layer Marney Tower.

Kevin and Fergal won the event, achieving an astonishing average MPG of 98 over the route. Kevin Booker commented: 'The Jazz really was the only car to win the event, due to it only being open to petrol vehicles. The excellent real world fuel economy of the Honda jazz far exceeding its WLTP figure meant it was more than up to the challenge.'

Fergal McGrath commented: 'Having already achieved a Guinness World Record with a Honda Jazz in 2017, I was excited to participate in the Layer Marney Cup with Kevin. The Jazz again demonstrated it is capable of producing an outstanding fuel consumption along with being a very practical and reliable vehicle. A huge thank you to Bristol Honda (HSH Motor Group) for providing the car and also to the organisers, Sheila and John for putting on an incredibly enjoyable, interesting and historic event.'
